Impact the next generation with the love and truth of Jesus Christ by mobilizing churches to meet needs in local schools.
Learn the names of the principal, administrators, teachers, counselors and support staff. Ask church members to pray for them by name, and the students. Ask God to open opportunities for your church to meet needs in the school.
Contact schools and identify yourself, your church and the purpose of your call: “Are there needs in your school we can meet?” Schedule an appointment for follow-up. Think of yourself as missionaries, learning about their culture and needs. Rather than suggesting how you want to help, let them share how they need help.
Below are ideas of how churches have served their local schools. Remember, these are only ideas. The needs for your local schools may be different. Listen carefully to the school staff and only offer suggestions if needed.
Feed sports teams or provide snacks before and/or after competitions.
Send volunteers to mentor or tutor kids, especially with reading and math.
Volunteer to help with big events at the school (dances, fundraisers etc.).
Offer your church facility for school meetings, community events or other needs.
Support school drives for backpacks, coats or school supplies.
Donate hygiene items school nurses can give to students who need them.
Provide food or snacks during summer camps (band, football etc.).
Supply weekend food bags for children receiving free or reduced lunches.
Use parent support centers (Title 1 schools) for volunteer training.
